Do you have hazardous materials such as leftover paint removers and thinners, antifreeze, lawn and garden chemicals and cleaners in your you'd like to get rid of?  If you live in a member community, schedule an appointment to bring these items to the SCILA site for safe, free disposal by calling 515-462-3083. Appointments for hazardous waste drop off are available Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Saturdays 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Many of our member communities provide an annual drop off site within their community where the SCILA mobile hazardous waste unit collects items. Residents may check with their local city administrative office for information on a local annual drop off site.

Household Hazardous Waste - Accepted Items
The following household hazardous waste items are accepted during normal business hours by appointment:

bulletPaint remover and thinner
bulletGasoline and kerosene
bulletWindow washer solution
bulletAerosol cleaners
bulletDrain and oven cleaners
bulletMetal polish and rust removers
bullet(only) oil and lead-based paint
bulletWallpaper remover
bulletRoofing tar
bulletPetroleum-based adhesives
bulletGlues, caulk, contact cement and resins
bulletFertilizers, pesticides and week killers
bulletRat, mouse and gopher poison
bulletSwimming pool chemicals
bulletRechargeable batteries

If you have a hazardous item not listed here, please contact us.  We can assist you with finding an agency that will accept it.
 

Household Hazardous Waste - Items NOT Accepted
  The following household hazardous waste items are NOT accepted
bulletMotor Oil (ask a local automobile service station)
bulletAmmunition (contact your local police department)
bulletExplosives (contact your local police or fire department)
bulletAsbestos
bulletRadioactive Material
bulletFire Extinguishers (contact your local fire department)
bulletNon hazardous waste such as empty aerosol cans (place in trash) or latex paint (dry out and place in trash)

Business Hazardous Waste
Businesses with hazardous waste items may call (name) at 1-888-603-2739 for disposal options to fit your need.
 
Used Oil & Filters
Establishments that sell oil, including all automotive service agencies, are required to accept used oil and filters or provide a list of who will.  A disposal fee may apply.  Check your local phone book for these agencies in your community.
 
Lead Acid Batteries
Places that sell lead acid batteries, including all automotive service agencies, are required to accept them or provide a list of who will.  A disposal fee may apply.  Check your local phone book for these agencies in your community.
