Common Waste

During normal business hours, the following residential items are accepted at the SCILA landfill. Please note that SCILA staff does not unload items brought for disposal. Also, the landfill is not responsible for damage to tires on vehicles used to bring items to the dumping area.

Commercial haulers are charge the tonnage rate of $38.00/ton ($15 minimum) for all loads brought in that are 800lb or below with a $15.00 minimum. These haulers may contact our office at 515-776-8864 for information on commercial waste disposal.

* Any load untarped will be charged an additional $10.00 fee for that load.

EFFECTIVE JULY 1st, 2008

Appliances

Disposal fee is $15.00 for each item.

We accept the following appliances during normal business hours:

  • Stoves
  • Refrigerators
  • Microwaves
  • Clothes Washers/dryers
  • Dish Washers
  • Furnaces
  • Air Conditioners
  • Hot Water Heaters
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Florescent Fixtures

Furniture

Large furniture items such as recliners, couches, mattresses may be brought by residents for disposal. Fee will be assessed on the tonnage rate of $38.00 per ton ($15 minimum).

Tires

We accept tires from households only – no businesses. No rims please!

Charges for tire disposal are as follows:

  • Car tire (15″ or less) = $5.00 each
  • Pickup/Truck tire = $10.00 each
  • Tractor tire = $20.00 each

Construction Materials

Non hazardous construction/remodeling materials may be brought by residents for disposal. Fee will be assessed on the tonnage rate of $38.00 per ton ($15 minimum). Hazardous materials, such as oil based paint must be separated from the rest of the load and may be brought to the hazardous waste disposal area of the landfill by appointment only.

Brush

Tree limbs, branches and cut up tree trunks are accepted from both businesses and individuals.

Charges for disposal are:

  • Brush = $38.00 per ton ($15 minimum)

* Please note that we do not accept Christmas trees.

Leaves

We do not accept leaves.

Sheep Carcass

During normal business hours, sheep carcasses are accepted. Hauler must bring their own bag of lime to spread over the sheep. Cost is $5.00 per carcass.

Hazardous Waste

Do you have hazardous materials such as leftover paint removers and thinners, antifreeze, lawn and garden chemicals and cleaners in your you’d like to get rid of? If you live in a member community, schedule an appointment to bring these items to the SCILA site for safe, free disposal by calling 515-776-8864. Appointments for hazardous waste drop off are available Monday-Friday 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM and on Saturdays 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM (during summer hours).

Many of our member communities provide an annual drop off site within their community where the SCILA mobile hazardous waste unit collects items. Residents may check with their local city administrative office for information on a local annual drop off site.

Household Hazardous Waste

Accepted Items

The following household hazardous waste items are accepted during normal business hours by appointment:

  • Stain and varnish
  • Paint remover and thinner
  • Gasoline and kerosene
  • Window washer solution
  • Aerosol cleaners
  • Drain and oven cleaners
  • Metal polish and rust removers
  • Oil and lead-based paint
  • Wallpaper remover
  • Roofing tar
  • Petroleum-based adhesives
  • Glues, caulk, contact cement and resins
  • Fertilizers, pesticides and week killers
  • Rat, mouse and gopher poison
  • Swimming pool chemicals
  • Rechargeable batteries

Household Hazardous Waste

Items NOT Accepted

The following household hazardous waste items are NOT accepted

  • Motor Oil (ask a local automobile service station)
  • Ammunition (contact your local police department)
  • Explosives (contact your local police or fire department)
  • Asbestos
  • Radioactive Material
  • Fire Extinguishers (contact your local fire department)
  • Non hazardous waste such as empty aerosol cans or latex paint

Business Hazardous Waste

Businesses with hazardous waste items may call (name) at 1-888-603-2739 for disposal options to fit your need.

Used Oil & Filters

Establishments that sell oil, including all automotive service agencies, are required to accept used oil and filters or provide a list of who will. A disposal fee may apply. Check your local phone book for these agencies in your community.

Lead Acid Batteries

Places that sell lead acid batteries, including all automotive service agencies, are required to accept them or provide a list of who will. A disposal fee may apply. Check your local phone book for these agencies in your community.
